In today’s video, we discuss Shawn Baker posting a study saying that the ketogenic diet can help with colorectal cancer by increasing production of the fatty acid stearate. This study was very mechanistic in nature & was performed in… wait for it… MICE Ok Shawn, so you are saying that mechanistic mouse studies are now ok to cite as slam dunk proof? Why don’t you talk about the studies that suggest various components of red meat increase colon cancer when fed to rodents (PMIDs: 25592152, 25744414, & 21885815) Why doesn’t Shawn talk about those studies? Wha ha ha happened? Oh yea, it’s because it doesn’t fit his bias. Now personally, I don’t put much stock in these mechanistic rodent studies without relevant human outcome data. I don’t think red meat is inherently carcinogenic because when overall diet quality is controlled for, we don’t see increased cancer rates (PMID: 32751091). But I also don’t think the ketogenic diet is a treatment for colon cancer, especially if you aren’t consuming adequate fiber as part of it since fiber intake is one of the biggest reducers of colon cancer risk.
