In today's episode, we talk about the risks of using Ozempic or Wegovy (GLP-1 agonist medications) for weight loss. My guest is Märcelle Pick, a functional medicine practitioner and nurse practitioner who has specialized in women's health since 1983. We discuss how GLP-1 drugs don't address the underlying cause of weight gain, which is metabolic inflexibility. It's shocking to learn that 93% of the US population is metabolically inflexible, contributing to health issues like heart disease and dementia. Obesity also increases inflammation and hunger through fat cells acting as an endocrine organ. While the new weight loss drugs may seem tempting, they may not help in the long run. GLP-1 meds help you feel full by decreasing stomach emptying, but there are no long-term studies on their use for weight loss. Side effects can be serious, including nausea, vomiting, and even lawsuits for increased suicidal ideation and gastroparesis. If people stop the medication without making lifestyle changes, they often regain the weight. Instead, we discuss alternative approaches, such as stimulating the GLP hormone naturally, addressing emotions and trauma (as shown in the ACE Study linking childhood trauma to health issues), and supporting neurotransmitters.
